2014 was a pretty special year for myself and my home produced 17 year old  horse Shooting Star II (Kenny), and one I never believed would be beaten!  And then 2015 happened!

As with any sport or riding discipline, the phrase ‘no pain no gain’ is certainly true for riding aside!  My side saddle is dated back to the 1930’s so not quite as comfortable and padded as modern day saddles.  I used to suffer terribly with a numb derriere and pins and needles after sitting up there for some time whilst in the ring.  That was until I discovered Derriere!! Yes I was skeptical and dismissed that a pair of pants could help that much!

Curiosity got the better of me, and after reading great reviews on Derrieres, I decided to purchase my first pair.  I opted for the padded panty as thought these might ease the numbness slightly.  

Our season usually begins with attending mostly Side Saddle Association Area Shows where we gain Equitation qualification points for the championships at the National Show.  With the show season underway, it became apparent very quickly that I was going long periods in the saddle before I was realizing my rear wasn’t numb!  In fact it was quite comfortable!  

As the season went on I had gone from being skeptical to not able to leave for a show without my new wonder pants! I was totally converted.

The first part of the season was quite successful with several wins under our belt. 

One of the shows I aim for in the season is Royal Three Counties in June.  It’s fairly local for me and a show I love.  I entered the Classical Ladies qualifier class.  Last year things didn’t go quite right and he became very unsettled in the ring.   So this year I was quite apprehensive as to how he would respond.  Despite last years hiccup, I decided to keep to our usual routine. We had some great competition and all I wanted was for him to stay settled.  Words can not describe how incredible he felt as soon as we went into trot on the go round.  

He simply delivered exactly what I asked and then some.  I couldn’t quite believe when my number was called out in 1^st place (I even had to double check it!!).  It was even more special to have so many friends and family there too.

After Royal Three Counties, we start preparing for the National Show which is the first weekend in August.  In preparation we attended several shows, again where we were successful with great comments. The National Show is a three day show, and my first thought was that I’ve only got one pair of Derrieres! So I was straight online to order another 2 pairs! 

Our Side Saddle area had put together a team to compete for the Area Equitation award at the National Show.  I have never competed in any Equitation Championship, but for team reasons I was asked to do the Intermediate class. Of course I was more than happy to be part of the team, whilst very nervous I would do the team proud.  

It soon became time for The Side Saddle National Show.  The lorry was packed and off we went to Adddington Manor.  Our first class (a dressage test) was very excitable and was a case of just steer!! 

He soon settled for our Veteran class where  he felt super. He won the class in good company and then stood reserve champion.  

Day 2 arrived……our Intermediate Equitation Championship class.  The class comprises of a dressage type test and then judged on turnout immediately after.  We went in for our test and my stomach was churning but I just went for it.  Again he rose to the occasion.  I went down the final centre line with a huge smile and left the arena thinking that was a great test (I never think that!!!)  We would have to wait for our results.  We went off for 2 more classes, we won the hacks, and 3^rd in the costume.  

I went to see our results for equitation.  I couldn’t believe it….we won our class!!!  And with my incredible team mates who had also done fantastically, we won the Area Trophy!  Day 3 was pretty special also,  we were 3^rd in a very strong Classical Ladies Final.  All in all a National Show never to be forgotten!!!

After this show we attended a few more shows and some dressage for some variety.  He won several classes including wins at Usk and Beaufort Hunt.

His dressage (astride) has been fantastic this year too.  Winning Novice classes with scores all over 70%.

I’ve spent many hours in the saddle this year and I think my boyfriend/super groom will agree, there hasn’t been moaning because my rear has been numb or I’ve had  cramp!!  What an incredible year it’s been and have to thank Claire and the team at Derriere Equestrian for their part in it, my rear is certainly very appreciative!!!. 

I’ve recently bought my 4^th pair to complete the collection of one of each color! I can’t recommend these enough and especially to my side saddle friends.

Now my dilemma is……which of my lucky Derrieres is my luckiest pair????

They say time flies when you’re having fun and that can certainly be said about the 2015 endurance season! It seems only yesterday that I was planning the events for the year, and now I’m reminiscing about what a brilliant season 2015 has been, whilst watching my horse’s grazing in the field on their winter break.

I always set a main goal for each competition horse at the start of every season so that all of my team now what we are aiming for and how we are going to achieve it. Every horse is different, and I am fortunate to have three current competition horses at different levels.

My aim with my top horse Elayla, was to complete our first CEI *** 160km, which we completed back in April in a respectable 2^nd place. Since then Layla has gone above and beyond my expectations, picking up a 1^st in a 80km YR class, 2^nd in a CEI ** 120km and 3^rd in the prestigious Red Dragon 160km.

A big surprise for me this season is how far I have got with my home bred part bred Arab, Burfield Goodie Two Shoes. At only 13.3hh, my plan was just to see what happens this season, but yet again she has gone above and beyond my expectations. Before March this mare had never competed above 32km, but to date she has now successfully completed 5 80km classes, and won her first CEI * 80km back in September.

I am very lucky to have been given the ride of Penhwnllys Samala De Mons, or Marley as she’s known at home. Marley is only 6years old and has a big future in front of her. Having only started competing her in August we have achieved a lot in the short time we have been a combination. Before this time Marley had only competed up to 40km, but in September she completed her first 80km class and came 2^nd. This has put her in good stead for her upcoming International debut in 2016.

In total this season I have successfully completed 1434km just in competition alone and not 1km was without my derrieres. They have become a part of my essential riding equipment and now I will not ride without them! My lucky pair may even have become part of my essential exam equipment for my A levels exams, but that’s another story….

With the only event left of the endurance calendar being the Annual National Awards Dinner at the end of November, it is time for me to start planning for the 2016 season, and I can all ready see with so many horses to ride I am going to need to become Lorenzo the Flying Frenchman!  As always I have big plans for next year, but I will obviously have to wait to see how the horses come out of their winter break and start their training in the middle of December.  With Layla qualified for the Young Riders European Championships and the Senior World Championships, these will take priority and her season will be tailored towards these championships and the selection process to get there. I hope that Shoes will have her first attempt at a CEI ** 120km class in 2016, whilst also having a slightly mad desire to take her up to Scotland to do the scary Cairngorm 100miles in 24 hours! In order to start on the International ladder Marley needs to complete another 80km and then she will be ready to do her CEI * 80km early next season.

Meanwhile for the rest of the year I am concentrating on my next horse to start on the endurance ladder. 4 year old, Nahzira Bint Chatanz, or Izzy as she’s known, is backed and ready to go and is enjoying schooling and her first baby steps out hacking. She has a long way to go before her first competition, but I am looking forward to her making her endurance debut in 2015.

So this just leaves me to say thank you Derriere for all the support I have received this season and here’s to many more Derriere Endurance miles! The entire season in my lucky derrieres and I actually wore for all my A- level exams because I hoped they would be lucky for exams as well as horses!

The 2015 season has pretty much come to an end and the last few months have been fairly busy, with 3 Internationals over 4 months, supported by the BD National Championships in September.

At the beginning of the year I gained the ride of Annie Whittet’s Dior UKH (Pimms) a 12 year old 17hh chestnut mare by Dimaggio, and I can’t express how proud I am of her performances this year and how far we have come together. It always takes time with a new horse, finding out what makes them tick and particularly with all the demands of travelling and staying away at different venues, Pimms was definitely thrown into the deep end! Thanks to our amazing support team and my trainer, Stephen Moore (who to say has been instrumental in our success this year would be a huge understatement), we’ve managed to get to grips with her fairly quickly.

After strong performances at Hartpury in July, she finished winning all 3 classes at Bishop Burton CPEDI 3* in August on PB’s before becoming Grade 2 National Champion in the KBIS class at the BD Nationals in September. The following month we completed our last International of the year at Bury Farm CPEDI 3*, where we were crowned overall Grade 2 Champions, Grade 2 Freestyle Champion and was a member of the winning GB Team. On top of her competition results I am thrilled with how much her confidence in the arena has developed and she really feels like she’s enjoying the big atmosphere – she loves to show off to an audience!

 

As a result of our performance, according to the FEI, I’m now ranked #26 in the World (across all Grades), the 6^th highest Brit and currently the 6^th highest Grade 2 in the World - an amazing achievement in our first year together! In December, we have our last World Class Team GBR Squad Training of the year and then we will be into the 2016 season…campaigning for Rio Paralympics! Next year ,all eyes will be on selections for Rio, and with only 5 spaces for Team GBR, as always, competition will be tough, but we are ready to give it our best shot!

I’m proud to have been representing the Derriere brand and take #ThePerfectSeat message around the country with me!

It was great to catch up with Claire at the Nationals and see the new products and I’m looking forward to a successful, and comfortable season in the saddle next year!

Closing the thigh gap... Between rider and horse

Far from deconstructing the unhealthy phenomena women have with the 'apparently' desirable thigh gap, I want to discuss a completely different gap, and I want to close it. And this gap, well, it's between the rider and horse, it's about being as ergonomically designed as possible to ensure the best seat is achieved.

Previously, I have blogged about the importance of strong glutes, now I'm moving on to the thighs, another absolutely integral element to rider perfection. Our thighs create the framework around the horse, and it is of the utmost importance that the correct underwear is worn to ensure chafing around the legs does not occur. Derriere Equestrian have done a huge wealth of research on precisely this problem to ensure that their amazing brand has the most streamlined fit; that it is there to support the rider one hundred per cent of the time. In essence, and excusing the horrendous pun, they are the pants that will not fall down at any hurdle.

The thighs are responsible for shaping the movement and controlling the energy of the ride. However, they are only able to perform this role effectively if they are in the correct position and strong. The natural stance for the hips when sitting on the saddle is an external rotation, a falling out to the side, which of course totally limits control. This is only exacerbated when the horse moves, so the importance of engaging the inner thighs just cannot be emphasised enough. If these inner thigh muscles are tight, it may prove near impossible to rotate the thighs in enough, this is because these adductors are a double edged sword, not only are they responsible for bringing the legs together, but also rotating the legs outwards.

Consequently, if the adductors are tight the job of external rotation is too efficient and the thighs may be locked in an outward position unable to rotate inwards. This of course impacts on the riders control of the horse, as strong thighs have the power to lift the horse's back, slow, half halt, send energy up or collect a trot or canter etc. Yet, before you stare down at those thighs in despair, don't give up, oh no, for I have the solution. Indeed, any tightness in the musculature can be corrected through considered stretching exercises and that is where a Pilates Reformer Instructor like yours truly comes in super handy! Together you and I can embark on a beautiful journey to eventually achieve the coveted position of a thigh that is rotated enough so that it lays flat to the horse with both the knee and toe pointing forward. And that, my dear readers, that is rider heaven, that is nirvana, that is the gift.

The 14^th October 2015 saw Derriere Equestrian open their doors to the Equestrian Trade and the inaugural Derriere Day Conference was launched. Held at The Lifford Hall in Broadway, Worcestershire the event attracted retailers and equestrian trade from: The UK, Ireland, Poland, The Netherlands, Sweden, and Italy. With other retailers from the Derriere family in: Germany, Denmark and Finland very keen to be a part of the event. Further afield in: Australia, Japan, USA & Canada Derriere retailers are keen to log in and view the presentations online, to take advantage of this outstanding CPD experience.

The concept of the Derriere Day was born as the brain-child of Claire Galer MD at Derriere Equestrian. After the first successful year of trading, Claire felt an important factor of successful business practice, is that of looking after your clients, customers and colleagues and where possible giving back to the industry and to the trade.

Claire Galer says of the event “I wanted to organize a conference for our industry that provided a platform for learning and expansion of skill-sets and knowledge. With all content focused on current trends and tools to optimize retailer’s sales and marketing skills in these areas”

The day featured guest speakers: Sarah Orchard of Orchard Marketing and Amy Fothergill from Horse and Hound. 

Claire Galer opened the presentations with an overview of Derriere Equestrians first year of trading and the journey the business has travelled so far, this was followed by a short briefing on optimising Derriere displays and points on staff training and increasing sales. Michella Jorgensen of Team Derrieres Padded Support System Design in Italy flew over for the event and joined Claire on stage to discuss the development, research and manufacturing process the DEPSS has gone through to bring the products to market. 76 guests 

registered for the day, the turnout was very pleasing for the 

first of an event of this kind.  Tim Galer, Director at 

Derriere Equestrian, introduced all the speakers 

throughout the day and assisted in 

fielding questions.

The presentations given by both Sarah Orchard and Amy Fothergill had the entire audience engaged from the off, they both presented to an exceptionally high standard, with such advanced knowledge in their fields of specialism, that resulted in all delegates wanting to pocket size both Amy and Sarah and take them back to their offices! The content covered included: Marketing, 3 key steps to success, target markets, 5 marketing must do’s, Google, Customer Databases, Newsletters, Mailchimp, Promotions, Blogging, Social Media, Analytic s, how to use Facebook, how to use Twitter, how to use Instagram, benefits of Blogging, Content, Insight, SEO, Web, Mobile Optimization. The interaction between the delegates and the speakers was highly engaged, everyone involved had a superb day and without any doubt learnt so much.

Over a delicious lunch prepared by Juliet Ascroft from “For the love of food”, the delegates were entertained with a fabulous fashion show presented by the team of Derriere Equestrian Models: Laura-Eve Thyer, Jude Broom, Jamie Roach and Louis Payton. Ian Piper from the Derriere graphics design team videoed all the presentations and was available with his vast knowledge on all technical design for all delegates throughout the day.

After such a successful inaugural event, Derriere Equestrian have already started putting in place the plans for an even bigger event next year. Claire Galer says “We have been approached by a number of brands to join us next year and to work with us on this great concept. I cannot reiterate how important it is to us, to work closely with all of our clients and ensure they feel looked after by our brand. We will once again plan to bring to the trade an informative, interesting and engaging day of sales and marketing for the retail trade once again in 2016.  We would like to thank all those that were involved, the entire team who pulled together such an outstanding day, our exceptional guest speakers, our beautiful models, Juliet Ascroft of “For the love of food” who ensured everyone was well catered for throughout the day, Ian Piper for his Video Skills and of course a big thank you to all those that attended the event from all over the UK and from Europe too. An absolute success and we feel very proud to have hosted such a beneficial event for the equestrian trade”
