Protecting the jewels in the crown!
It’s a sensitive subject so please excuse our bluntness. But
men’s nether regions need to be protected! The crown jewels should not be
subjected to bashing, crushing, jiggling or in fact any form of unnecessary
movement - so for years, male horse riders have been using cycling shorts,
swimming trunks and a-size-to-small briefs to keep their genitals snugly in
place when riding.
This sensitive issue isn’t a new problem of course - just
think of the thousands of cavalry officers in years gone by, who were in the
saddle for hours! Apparently, savvy saddlers accounted for men’s downstairs
appendages with innovations like the McClellan Military saddle, which was used
from the late 1900s until World War II, and had a very deep seat with extra
‘space’ at the front. However, today’s mass-market saddles make no such
deviations from the standard saddle seat shape.
Men have narrower seatbones than their female counterparts,
as well as a smaller pelvic girdle and hip sockets. The ‘classical’ lengthened
riding position is actually physiologically easier for men, as they can flatten
their backs more when tilting their pelvis. However this does place them on the
middle of their seatbones, and can cause potential issues caused by personal
discomfort. The issues include pain in the seat bone area, soreness around the
perineum, chafing in the inner thigh area and even infected hair follicles.
Cyclists have been wearing padded underwear for years, with
many favouring the ‘snug and lifted’ preference that cycling underwear allows.
However, it is only in recent years that male horse riders have had the
opportunity to follow suit, with sport-specific briefs. Fortunately, Derriere Equestrian
offers the Derriere Equestrian Seamless Shorty and the Derriere Equestrian Bonded Padded Shorty, to ensure male riders
aren’t compromised in the saddle.
The Seamless Shorty is designed to eradicate seamlines
visible through breeches, and ensure no rubbing, chaffing or abrasions are
created due to stitched seams. Its cousin the Padded Shorty goes one step
further with its additional Padded Support System that protects the perineal
area from friction.
Customer Louis Richard used to get uncomfortable rubs and
sores from breeches worn with normal briefs when riding, but says the Derriere
Shorties have now revolutionised his comfort. “They are really comfy for me,
and make the biggest difference,” he says.
The company’s Treviso Training Breeches and CannesCompetition Breeches add a further dimension of comfort to proceedings - the
breeches work in harmony with the Derriere undergarments, ensuring all fabric
surfaces come together in a symbiosis that completely eliminates chaffing,
abrasions and discomfort. The fabrics and materials are the ultimate in equestrian
riding apparel, blending Cotton, Microfibre and Elasthane for ultimate male
comfort in the saddle.
